Overview

Our remote probes are wet/dry and allow our wine cooling units to be located remotely from the wine cellar, allowing the cooling unit to cycle on/off based on changes of the air or liquid temperature inside the wine cellar.

Details

CellarPro Bottle Probe (P/N 1434). Our bottle probe is strongly recommended when

  • the cooling unit is in a remote location and the cold airflows are ducted
  • the cooling unit is not located near the top of the wine cellar
  • the cooling unit is one of our Houdini cooling units, and the bottle probe must be used in a bottle filled with liquid (mostly water with a bit of alcohol)
  • the wine cellar door is frequently opened and closed

Our bottle probe can be used to measure liquid or air temperatures. If measuring air temperature, the probe should not be placed in an empty bottle. It has a waterproof sheathing, and includes a rubber bottle stopper to keep liquid inside the bottle so that the bottle can be placed on its side.

If used to measure liquid temperature, the bottle probe can be inserted into a wine bottle filled with water and alcohol (to avoid bacteria growth.) Please note: the cooling unit's HY differential should be set to "1" when the probe is inserted in liquid, and should be set to "4" when measuring air temperature.

The bottle probe includes a 10-foot cord and the end point should be in a location with good airflow inside the cellar. The other side of the probe is fitted with a jack that plugs directly into the face of the wine cooling unit.

Operating Instructions:.

  • When measuring liquid temperatures, the (HY) differential should be set at 1 degree (so that the wine liquid doesn't fluctuate more than 1 degree.)
  • When measuring air temperatures, the probe should be exposed, not in a bottle, and the (HY) differential should be set at 4 degrees (the cooling unit will burn out prematurely if the unit cycles on'off every time the air temperature changes by 1 degree.)
  • The bottle probe must be located in a location with good air movement in order to correctly register the temperature changes inside the cellar.
  • When measuring air temperature with ducted systems, the ideal location for the remote probe is in the return air register; when measuring air temperature with through-the-wall systems, the ideal location for the remote probe is near the return air grill; when measuring liquid temperatures in bottles, the ideal location of the bottle is near the top of the racks with good airflow.
  • In all cases, it is recommended to check the actual cellar temperature against the display temperature when the bottle probe is first setup and subsequently whenever the location moves.
  • Refer to our Owners Manual for instructions how to change the HY differential

Bottle probes are compatible with all CellarPro wine cooling units smaller than our AH18 sizes.

Features

  • Digital temperature control based on air or liquid temperature
  • Jack plugs directly into the face of the wine cooling unit
  • When used in a wine bottle, the rubber bottle stopper prevents spills and leaks
  • 10-ft cord allows maximum flexibility
  • Recommended when the wine cooling unit will be placed remotely or away from the top of the wine cellar
  • Also can be used in odd-shaped wine cellars

Good product, could use better installation directions

by -

The remote probe has helped reduce the unit's on/off cycles, which will help the overall life of the unit. A little legwork goes into setting up the probe - you need to have a wine bottle and isopropyl alcohol. I wish these items were included because they would have sped up the installation process instead of going to the store to get isopropyl alcohol. I chose to drink a clear glass bottle of white wine to see the liquid's color.

The hardest part was figuring out how to install the probe in the bottle so that the bottle could lay flat. I could not find any directions on this, but I ended up removing the probe from the plastic plug, inserting the plug into the bottle, and then inserting the probe into the plug. Better directions could have been provided to prevent the headache I encountered with the setup, but the product worked as intended once the setup was done.

Worked as advertised

The bottle probe had the desired effect: the unit (CellarPro 4200 Vsi) runs a little longer each cycle and drops the humidity in the cellar a few percent. Temperature is steady as a rock at 56 degrees F. Humidity ranges 65-70%.

Easy to install and solved my problem. I own a LeCache Contemporary 1400 which holds 180 bottles. the temperature of the bottom rack was consistently 5 degrees warmer than the top rack. All bottles are now maintained at the same target temperature after the installation of the probe. My only complaint is that instructions were not included with the probe, requiring two calls to customer support. It does seem that the probe ought to be included with the purchase of the cabinet as I am sure most users have this problem, and may not be aware of it.
