Overview

CellarPro 1800H-ECX Cooling Unit (P/N 25544). NOW WITH ENERGY-EFFICIENT EC FANS! CellarPro engineered the 1800H-ECX cooling unit specifically for shallow-depth glass wine cellars.

Just 10 1/2-inches deep and 10-inches tall, the 1800H-ECX Houdini cooling unit is designed to "disappear" inside - or atop - the cellar. Dual independent variable-speed fans offer flexibility to trade-off between super-quiet operation vs maximum performance.

For example, assuming 75F ambient temperature, R13 insulation in the non-glass walls and no ducting, the 1800H-ECX would work in the following cellars:

  • CellarPro 1800H-ECX cooling units are self-contained, fully-charged units designed to be attached to the ceiling inside the cellar, or above the cellar.
  • 1800H-ECX units also can be located remotely from the cellar with the addition of one of our cold-side duct packages. Offered with or without insulated flex ducting, in a choice of configurations for low or high humidity conditions, our cold-side duct packages allow these cooling units to be ducted up to 50 equivalent feet (25' per duct). Ducting must be 8-inch (or greater) from start to finish.
  • When calculating equivalent feet, each 90-degree turn counts for 8 feet.
  • For remote or inaccessible installations, we offer a remote control display kit which is wired to the cooling unit and allows the digital display to be mounted inside or outside the cellar.
  • 1800H cooling units require fresh air intake without interference from the unit's hot air exhaust. If sufficient space does not exist to provide fresh air, you may need our hot-side duct kit. The temperature of the fresh air intake should be within a range of 40F to 95F
  • The cold side of the cooling unit should never be exposed to temperatures below 32F.
  • A CellarPro cooling unit must always be used in the upright position, and should never be operated on its side or upside down.

Q&A

What is "Sensible BTUH"?

A: You should always use Sensible BTUH* when comparing different brands of cooling units, and when sizing a cooling unit for your wine cellar. Every cooling unit produces a certain amount of Total BTUH, which is the sum of Sensible BTUH (lowers the temperature) and Latent BTUH (lowers the relative humidity). Because our goal is to cool wine cellars while preserving humidity, wine cellar cooling units should have high Sensible BTUH and low Latent BTUH. The relationship between Sensible and Latent BTUHs is know as SHR (Sensible Heat Ratio), which is calculated as Sensible BTUH/Total BTUH. The SHR for CellarPro cooling units is greater than 90%, which means that CellarPro units provide maximum cooling power without stripping out humidity from the cellar environment.

*CellarPro Sensible BTUHs are calculated assuming 55F cellar temperature, 60% relative humidity and 95F ambient for all units except 1800 units (85F ambient).

How do I pick between this unit and the 1800XTS?

A: This cooling unit and the 1800XTS provide the same BTUH output, and therefore can be used to cool wine cellars with similar thermal loads. The biggest difference is that the 1800XTS was designed - and works best - when installed through-the wall, with the front 8 inches of the cooling unit inside the wine cellar. Also, the cold side of the 1800XTS cannot be ducted unless the cooling unit is located directly above the cellar. In contrast, the 1800H-ECX cooling unit was designed for shallow-depth installations, inside or atop the cellar. In addition, the 1800H-ECX can be placed up to 50 equivalent feet away from the wine cellar and ducted. Other differences include an advanced condensate management system in the 1800H-ECX, which has a large stainless steel drain pan and 100W condensate evaporator, as well as variable-speed fan control and removable power cord in the 1800H-ECX cooling unit.

How cold can the temperature be where the cooling unit pulls air?

A: For installations in environments below 40F down to 20F, we recommend adding our compressor heater (P/N 1727), which is included as standard equipment on all outdoor units. Below 20F, in addition to the compressor heater, we recommend adding our fan cycling switch (P/N 6972)

Does the unit really need a dedicated circuit?

A: First, the background. Unlike our competitors, we build our cooling units with precision expansion valves, not cap tubes, which means that our cooling units aren't limited to a 30F differential between the desired cellar temperature and the ambient temperature. Cooling systems with expansion valves are much more precise than cap tubes, and much more sensitive to low voltage conditions, which is why our units require dedicated circuits. When we say "dedicated circuit", we mean that the circuit shouldn't have any items that require heavy draws of electricity - eg other appliances, vacuum cleaners, big-screen TVs, blow-dryers - on the same circuit as the cooling unit. Lighting, computers or other low-draw items shouldn't be a problem on the same circuit.

Can the cooling unit be located in a remote location and ducted to/from the wine cellar?

A: These cooling units can be ducted up to 50 equivalent feet away from the wine cellar when used with our cold-side (front) duct hoods and kits. Remember that cold-side ducting must be insulated and additional load should be added to properly size the required cooling unit.

Can I install the entire unit inside the cellar?

A: These cooling units can be installed completely inside the wine cellar, attached to the ceiling, with the hot air exhaust and fresh air intake pushed to and pulled from the space above the cellar.

If I don't have sufficient space to pull fresh air, is that Ok?

A: The hot side of the cooling unit generates hot air that must have sufficient space to dissipate, otherwise the unit will recycle its own hot air. The hot air exhaust and/or intake can be ducted to another location with our hot-side duct hoods and kits, which allow supply and return airflows to be redirected to and from a temperature controlled environment OUTSIDE the cellar.

Can I use the low fan speed setting on the cooling unit when the unit is ducted?

A: Duct hoods and kits create additional static pressure and therefore require the use of the high fan speed to overcome the additional static pressure.

Do I need the condensate drain line?

A: If you are using the cooling unit in an airtight cabinet or cellar, you probably don't need the drain line. To the extent that condensate is created, the 100W heating element inside the cooling unit reduces drainage as it helps to burns off condensate before it reaches the drain line. However, if your cabinet/cellar was built without a vapor barrier, or there are gaps where the door(s) closes against the cellar, you will need the drain line to allow excess condensate a path to be released to a designated location.

Great Little Unit

by

Unit is compact & clean. A visual asset to my customers cellar, in addition to performing as expected.

Expensive and disappointing

by

I am a Licensed Contractor in Florida, and we have installed several of these units. They are easy and versatile to install due to a variety of possible configurations for the ducting. Despite the appearance of being very well made, they just don't seem to last long. We've had trouble or premature failure of each one we have installed. Cellar Pro's standard answer for every problem is that it is an installation problem, regardless of the fact that we have used only their ducting kits and followed their instructions to the letter. They make the claim that any AC company can repair them, but none of the companies we have contacted in our area will touch them due to the PITA factor. The most recent one we installed was 2 years old but brand new in the box. It ran well and cooled the space effectively for about 2 months then abruptly stopped cooling. CellarPro referred me to local AC companies, none of whom will actually work on them. Expensive junk.

Great customer support

by

Perfect for what I needed. It was the best solution given the limited space I had for my wine cellar. Great customer support, I got support step by step from the unit selection to installation. Definitely recommended
